How it Works!

The Smartmatic™ transmission utilises conventional manual gearbox technology in conjunction with the unique Smartmatic™ Selector to create a low cost, high performance alternative to existing automatic gear box technology.

With the Smartmatic™ technology, the conventional constant mesh gear set are retained, however the synchroniser rings, dog clutches and shifting forks common to manual transmissions are deleted and replaced with a compact hydraulically or electronically operated actuator. There is a Selector attached to each gear in the transmission.

The first and reverse gears utilise Quad Cone Selector's for the dual purpose of a forward and reverse launching device and gear engagement selector. This negates the requirement for a torque converter or clutch plate/pressure plate assembly and housing, commonly used as in transmission designs today. All other gears utilise Dual Cone Selector's which are sufficient for dynamic gear engagement.
